Recognising fractions in the world around you is the fastest way to stop being afraid of them on paper.
A fraction represents a part of a whole. When we divide something into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole.
Numerator: The top number (shows how many parts we have)
Denominator: The bottom number (shows total equal parts)
Example: 3/4 means 3 parts out of 4 equal parts (three-fourths)
One-half: 1/2 (1 part of 2)
One-third: 1/3 (1 part of 3)
One-fourth: 1/4 (1 part of 4)
Three-fourths: 3/4 (3 parts of 4)
Two-thirds: 2/3 (2 parts of 3)
Problem: Rahul has 4 mangoes. He gives 1 mango to his friend. What fraction of mangoes did he give away? What fraction does he have left?
Solution:
Total mangoes = 4
Mangoes given away = 1
Fraction given away = 1/4 (one-fourth)
Mangoes left = 4 - 1 = 3
Fraction left = 3/4 (three-fourths)
Answer: Rahul gave 1/4 of the mangoes. He has 3/4 left!

Practice finding fractions of numbers: 1/2 of 10, 1/3 of 12, 1/4 of 20
Remember the trick: "1/4 of 20" means divide 20 by 4
Master division facts (÷2, ÷3, ÷4, ÷5) as they help with fractions
Most students treat fractions and division as completely separate topics. They are not.
1/4 of 20 means exactly the same thing as 20 ÷ 4. The answer is 5 in both cases.
This is why strong division skills make fractions easier — and why fractions are often tested right after division in Class 4 exams.
Whenever you see "find 1/__ of a number," just divide by the bottom number. That is the whole trick.

My child understands 1/2 and 1/4 but gets confused beyond that. What helps?
Start with physical objects — break a banana into 3 equal pieces and ask which fraction each piece is. The denominator becomes obvious when you can see and touch the parts. Move to drawing circles on paper before attempting numbers.
Why does a bigger denominator mean a smaller fraction?
Because the denominator tells you how many equal parts the whole is split into. If you split something into 8 parts, each part is smaller than if you split it into 2. So 1/8 is smaller than 1/2, even though 8 is bigger than 2.
How is comparing fractions taught in Class 4?
Class 4 focuses on comparing fractions with the same numerator (like 1/2 vs 1/4 vs 1/3) by reasoning about part size, and fractions with the same denominator (like 2/5 vs 3/5) by comparing numerators directly.
Is this worksheet suitable for CBSE, ICSE, and state board students?
