What is Addition and Subtraction?
Addition means putting things together!
When we add, we combine groups to find out how many we have in total. We use the + sign.
For example: 5 + 3 = 8 (5 apples plus 3 apples equals 8 apples)
Subtraction means taking away!
When we subtract, we remove some from a group. We use the - sign.
For example: 8 - 3 = 5 (8 apples minus 3 apples equals 5 apples)
Solved Examples: Step by Step

Common Mistakes & Tips
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
Counting Errors: Students often miscount when adding or subtracting larger numbers. Encourage them to use fingers or objects.
Confusion with Signs: Mixing up + and - signs. Remind them: addition makes numbers bigger (usually), subtraction makes them smaller.
Word Problem Confusion: Not identifying whether to add or subtract. Look for keywords: "total," "altogether" (add); "left," "remaining," "flew away" (subtract).
Top 5 Pro-Tips:
Use Real Objects: Practice with toys, coins, or fruits to make addition and subtraction concrete and visible.
Count Forward for Addition: When adding, start from the bigger number and count forward (e.g., for 8 + 3, start at 8 and count: 9, 10, 11).
Count Backward for Subtraction: When subtracting, start from the first number and count backward (e.g., for 10 - 4, start at 10 and count back: 9, 8, 7, 6).
The Zero Rule: Adding 0 keeps the number the same (5 + 0 = 5). Subtracting 0 also keeps it the same (8 - 0 = 8).
Check Your Work: After subtracting, add your answer to the number you subtracted. You should get the original number back (e.g., 10 - 4 = 6, check: 6 + 4 = 10).
