Learn place value for Class 2 with ones, tens, and hundreds. Includes solved examples, expanded form practice, and tips to help your child understand the value of each digit in a number.
Place value tells us the value of each digit in a number based on its position. Every number has three main places: the ones place is the rightmost digit, the tens place is the middle digit, and the hundreds place is the leftmost digit.
For example, in the number 235, the digit 2 is in the hundreds place and equals 200, the digit 3 is in the tens place and equals 30, and the digit 5 is in the ones place and equals 5. Together, 200 + 30 + 5 = 235.

Problem: What is the place value of each digit in 147?
The digit 1 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 100.
The digit 4 is in the tens place, so its value is 40.
The digit 7 is in the ones place, so its value is 7.
147 = 100 + 40 + 7.
Remember the position – Ones is always on the right, then tens, then hundreds as you move left.
Use a place value chart – Draw a chart with H, T, and O columns to organise digits clearly.
Understand that the same digit changes value – The digit 2 in 25 equals 20, but the digit 2 in 52 equals just 2.
Practice expanded form – Break numbers into hundreds + tens + ones. For example, 365 = 300 + 60 + 5.
Use real-life examples – Think of money. ₹100 notes represent hundreds, ₹10 notes represent tens, and ₹1 coins represent ones.
Check your work – Add up the expanded form to make sure it gives you back the original number.
